It's so fulfilling when it dawns on you what each little piece of the world means, like you're an anthropologist putting together the remains of an old civilization. Everything about the world just made sense, even though it was totally foreign, and because there's almost no dialogue or other characters, it's up to you to learn and discover what the purpose of the whole world is. Easily the most immersive, cohesive, singular, brilliantly conceived game experience I've ever had, and all with pre-rendered stills and animations. Short version: Myst and Riven were fantastic games, Uru was shaping up to be an incredible online foray into the Myst universe that would expand forever, and then publishers got involved and things got extremely weird and complicated.

End of Ages was cobbled together using a combination of new ideas and concepts as well as unused content from their first attempt at Uru Live, the MMO set in the Myst universe, and attempts to sew up the loose plot threads from both the Myst series and Uru as well as they can. It's not the worst game, but it's not the best either.

The team behind Myst IV decided to throw out all of the logic and technology of the series and pare everything down to "IT'S MAGIC!" which makes the game feel like some other point and click adventure that got hosed down with Myst juice near the end of it's development.Įnd of Ages is a bizarre beast. Revelation was put together by a team at Ubisoft and is a pretty decent adventure game, but a pretty awful Myst game.

Meant to be an online only game, Ubisoft forced Cyan into making a single-player component for the game, and then shut down the online portion about three months after launch. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst and it's two expansions are well worth your time as well, if you can adjust to the fact that you're going to be wandering around alone in worlds that were clearly meant to be explored with others. Just throw yourself into the world and immerse yourself.

It will take you a long time to crack its code, but there is no greater achievement once you do. And unlike most adventure games, it has a good logic to it and not 'developer logic'. It's the most intricate, 'organic' puzzle ever created in games. The entire game and all its puzzles are all clues to the massive puzzle at the climax. Go into the games with a notepad and pen free. Myst and Riven and the books are damn good time. I don't like REALMyst, but many prefer it. I was a part of the community for a while. Following GameTap pulling the plug, Cyan pledged to open source the game - this eventually spawned the free Myst Online: Uru Live Again server and the release of about 60% or so of the source code. In time the MMO concept was revived by GameTap and Cyan Worlds who revived the game as Myst Online. These games take place on modern Earth, two hundred years after the rest of the games. The first was an offline version of the MMO, named Uru: Ages Beyond Myst.Cyan Worlds released a final Myst game - Myst V: End of Ages, made out of cut content. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst/Myst Online: Uru Live/Myst Online: Uru Live Again and Myst V: End of Ages - The ill fated MMO project led by Rand Miller after Riven shipped launched two discreet titles. They're the black sheep of the franchise. It's better than Myst, but it's lumbered with Revelations, which IMO is a weak game.
